Prefer Travel to Read

May 19th, 2010   by Mac

I believe traveling is more important than reading books to understand the people and the world. A book about another country tells you about thing such as the country' s history, its people and its culture in a very general way When meeting foreigners, I found that books can't be trusted entirely. For example , when I was a visiting scholar in Wisconsin University , many people there knew China through books. They thought Chinese people were rigid, uneducated, and had no sense of humor, and they all wore blue suits. Even the picture in some people's minds was that Chinese still wore pigtails as their did in Qing Dynasty. Through the videotapes shown by me, they were shocked to find that these facts were not true at all and the Chinese people to be outgoing and intelligent, dress decently and have an equally strong sense of humor.

Reading a book about another country sparks my interest to travel. Then I make plans to go and see what I have read about. Ask yourself, if you buy a recipe book, are you going to just look at the pictures and read about how the dish is made? No, you want to learn to cook and taste it.

In addition, people who go out and experience things personally tend to be open-minded, and are really interested in making things happen. A friend of mine, Chen Ming, went to a backward rural area and experienced the sufferings of the children there first hand. Then he organized a medical team to give them treatment. Just reading about these children's situation cannot have the same impact as seeing them in person.

Nowadays, more and more Chinese travel at home or abroad. Especially the children who travel more will see the magnificent landscapes and are genuinely knowledgeable about their own country, thus creating curiosity about the outside world. Whenever I travel, I have felt enriched by the experiences. It is only by "getting into action" that one can make a mark in this world, and truly live a meaningful life.

Make Our Cities Greener

May 17th, 2010   by Mac

In recent years, many trees and flowers have been planted in and around all the cities of China. Some cities have already changed their faces. They look green now. But most cities haven't changed much. There are fewer trees along the streets, let alone lawns. We are facing a great task to make our cities greener.

To make our cities greener is very important. Trees and flowers are beneficial to our health because they absorb carbon dioxide and produce oxygen. They also can improve the microclimate of the cities, making hot weather cool. In addition, they can beautify our cities and turn them into lovely gardens.

How can we make our cities greener? First, we should plant more trees and flowers. Besides, we should carefully look after the planted trees and flowers. No one should be allowed to tread on grass, break off branches or pluck flowers. Of course, we should also learn gardening so as to protect the trees and flowers we have planted.

In order to make our cities greener, March 12 is fixed by our country as a day for planting trees. Cities belong to us all. Let's love them and make them greener.

On Working Mother

May 15th, 2010   by Mac

Nowadays it is very common for mothers to work outside the home. Whether a woman should stay at home or join the work force is debated by many people. Some argue that the family, especially small children, may be neglected. The fact is, however, that many women need to work because of economic reasons or want to work to maintain a career. I believe that every mother has the right to work, and the decision to work should be made on her The major problems a working mother faces are concerned with her children. She must either find a reliable person who will love toward the children or a good day-care center where the children can go. If a child gets sick , the mother must make special arrangements for the child to be cared for , or she must stay home from work. While at work, the mother may worry about her children. She may wonder if they arc safe, and if her absence is hurting them emotionally. She may also regret not being able to take them to after-school activities or participate in family activities with them. It is noticed that children whose mother stays at home are happier and get into less trouble.

Especially considering the fact that we are living in a open and free world , children really need parents to give them guidance and to even discipline them. When my friend Jim and his brother were little, his mother stayed at home. His mother was always around to guide them and .sometimes even to discipline them. However much they complained about this strict education, their parents believed what they were doing was for the good of the children. And now , they are both respected and well-known scientists.

Nevertheless, the role of women has shifted from the homemaker and nurturer to the professional of outside working world. Working can widen women' s vision and make them better understand men's world. Moreover, many mothers do work and manage a family very successfully.

A Negative Doubt

May 14th, 2010   by Mac

Life, in and as the creation of your life's experiences, is a wonderful adventure. You can embark on and flow with the adventure, by becoming spiritually aware of yourself, and knowing yourself.

Your life will take on an air of wonderment, and excitement. And, you will embrace even those negative experiences because you will have come to realize they are real blessings — blessings by which you may learn, grow, and unfold.

Have you ever noticed how doubt can cause you to become paralyzed? — how doubt can stop you in your tracks of creativity? Have you ever experienced a loss of joy and freedom because you had doubts? Sure you have. We all have experienced these situations.

There is a story about a schoolteacher named Jean Thompson, and a fifth grade boy named Teddy Stollard.

On the first day of school, Jean Thompson told her students "Boys and girls, I love all of you the same". Even though she felt she meant it, Jean was not able to love all of the students the same. She doubted the abilities of a boy named Teddy. Little Teddy Stollard was a boy she did not like. He slouched in his chair and didn't pay attention. His mouth hung open in a stupor. Teddy's eyes were always unfocussed, his clothes were mussed and his hair was unkempt.

He actually smelled, and Jean Thompson doubted his ability to learn.

Through school records, she learned that Teddy's mother had died a year ago, and his father showed no interest in Teddy. A previous teacher's note read: "Teddy is in deep waters; he's totally withdrawn. " Again and again, Miss Thompson pondered and doubted the ability of Teddy to get along in the world.

Christmas came, and the boys and girls brought their presents and piled them on her desk. They were all in brightly colored paper except for Teddy's. His was wrapped in brown paper and held together with a string. Scribbled on it were the words, "For Miss Thompson from Teddy. " She tore open the paper and out fell a rhinestone bracelet with most of the stones missing and a bottle of cheap perfume, almost empty.

When the other boys and girls started to giggle, Miss Thompson had enough sense to dab some of the perfume on her wrist and put on the bracelet. Holding her wrist up to the class she declared, "Isn't it lovely? Isn't the bracelet pretty?"

Taking their cue from the teacher, the other students agreed. She didn't know what had come over her, but some of the doubt she had been experiencing with Teddy disappeared. She noticed herself crumbing her attitude toward him.

At the end of the day, when all the children had left, Teddy lingered. He came over to her desk and said, "Miss Thompson all day long you smelled just like my mother. And her bracelet, that's mom's bracelet, looks real nice on you, too. I'm really glad you like my presents. " When Teddy left, she shed tears of gratitude and thanked God for allowing her to change. She thanked God for allowing her doubts to pass.

From then on she was a different teacher. She tutored Teddy and spent extra time with him. By the end of the year, Teddy had caught up with some of the children, and he was even ahead of some of the other children. Several years later, Jean Thompson got this note: "Dear Miss Thompson: I'm graduating. I'm second in my high school class. I wanted you to be the first to know, Love, Teddy Stollard. "

Four years later, she got another note: Dear Miss Thompson, I want you to be the first to know. The university has not been easy, but I like it. Love — Teddy Stollard.

Four years later another note: Dear Miss Thompson, today, I opened my clinic. I'm a chiropractor now. How about that? I wanted you to be the first to know, I'm going to be married in July. I want you to come and sit where my mother would have sat, because you're the only family I have. Dad died last year.

And Miss Thompson went. She sat where his mother would have sat. She deserved to be there because of what she had done several years earlier. She had doubted and saw that it could pass. She had changed, and thus supported another human being's change.

The Raising of Plants and Children

May 13th, 2010   by Mac

Raising houseplants involves nearly as much care and knowledge as raising children. First, both plants and children are sensitive to their environments. For example. a plant will grow faster and be much healthier if it is raised in an environment of tender and loving care. The same is true of a child, who will be happier and healthier if his parents love and nurture him.

Similarly, proper care of houseplants requires a basic knowledge of plants on the part of the owner. He must know, for example, which of his plants need direct sunlight and which need to be kept in shady places, and how much water each plant requires for the best growth and appearance. Parents, too, must have a basic knowledge of their children's needs in order to provide what is necessary for the best physical and mental development.

Finally, the owner of houseplants must be willing to provide the best possible care for his plants. A child needs time and energy from his parents,

too, as they play with him, talk to him, and care for him.

Generally speaking, happy, healthy plants and children are the result of extra time, knowledge, and energy.

The Meaning of Words

May 11th, 2010   by Mac

Sometimes different cultures use identical words that have rather different meanings. The results can be humorous, annoying, or costly, depending on the circumstances. Let us look at several examples.

An American university and its French partner discussed the possibilities of exchanges for students, professors, and administrators. Both sides agreed that it would be a good idea. The French negotiator spoke pretty good English, at first glance very good English; the American spoke good French. In the discussion they used both French and English. In both languages they used the identical word — administration — when they talked about exchanges between the administrations of the two institutions. The surprise came later. For the American, administration in the university context meant department chair, dean, or provost. For the French, administration meant upper-level clerical staff. What the American considered to be an administrator, the French considered faculty.

The word manager is used worldwide, but it has different levels of importance and meaning in different cultures. The same is true for the title director. Many Japanese, for example, have the title director on their business cards. In the American context a director is a person of some importance and power; in Japan that title may not carry the same level of authority. It may take some time to determine what the meaning of titles is and where a person stands in the hierarchy. The term director could be a loan word from English to translate the position for use on a business card; the word is the same, but the meaning may be slightly different. The term also could reflect cross-cultural differences in organizational structure. The word director may be the closest translation of the job-level title, which describes a job that does not exist in the U. S. corporate structure. Likewise, the words office worker and staff often are used for the general administrative workers in a Japanese work group, which tends to have less defined job categories than does its U. S. equivalent. An understanding of the specific title would require a more detailed explanation of the job and its fit in the organizational structure.

In the United States documents often are notarized. This is not a complex process. One simply goes to a notary public and gets the stamp and signature. Sometimes one pays a fee; sometimes the service is free. The German term, notarielle Beglaubigung, often translated as notarized, means something quite different. In this case one would go to a Notar, a lawyer. The Notar would prepare the document or, at a minimum, sign the document. This service is much more expensive. The meaning of the U. S. concept notarized is better reflected in the German term Beglaubigung, something any official person can do. The confusing part is the word notarized in the American expression. A notary public is not a Notar, The same confusion arises in Mexico, where a notaries is a lawyer with special privileges to perform certain functions that require special qualifications.

Both the French and the Americans use the word force majeure, but the phrase carries very different meanings. Literally, the term means superior or irresistible force. In U. S. legal language it refers generally to forces of nature or possibly war. The implications are that the terms of a contract may be changed because the risk was not allocated in either the expressed or the implied terms of the contract.

In European law the term has a broader meaning.- It includes the changes in economic conditions or other circumstances that were not anticipated when the contract was drawn up. The implication is that when Americans make agreements with Europeans and discuss unforeseen circumstances and use the term force majeure, they need to clarify what they mean and spell out what that term covers.

Get to do

May 10th, 2010   by Mac

Did you ever have something that someone said hit you like a ton of bricks?

That happened to me at 8:05 pm on Thursday, January 18, 2001. It is a day I will never forget.

I need to back track a little here, so you will understand where I am coming from. In September of 1997, I walked through the doors of Marian College as an adult student going to college for the first time, at 44 years old. It has always been a dream of mine to go to college, but that didn't lessen the butterflies in my stomach, or my lack of confidence. Today I have completed 96 credits and I have 33 more to go. I've come a long way from that first night 52 months ago.

It was during one of my current marketing classes that my instructor, Pam Schlenvogt, told us about "Get To", and I just can't get it off my mind.

She told us that we walk through life making choices. Some of them are good, and some of them not so good, but hopefully we learn something from all of them. She told us that night a little about attitude and how it affects us. She gave us a handout called "Life is an Attitude" and walked us through Accountability, Tenacity, Truth, Integrity, Trust, Understanding, Dedication, and Excellence. She also told us that we cannot choose what happens to us, but we can choose our attitudes toward each situation.

If we walk through life on the path we have chosen feeling as though we have to do this or we have to do that, eventually we might feel overwhelmed. She then told us about changing our attitude and looking at the opportunities presented to us each day. If we look at those opportunities or challenges with a "get to" instead of a "have to" we might enjoy the journey just a little bit more.

I decided to make a conscious effort over the next couple of days to exchange the words "have to" with "get to" in my conversations with friends, co-workers, and family, but most of all in my thoughts, and something amazing happened. I noticed all the things I "get to" do and started appreciating the opportunities and challenges on my path.

Just imagine:

I get to go to school to fulfill my dream.

I get to go to work when so many people can't.

I get to do the laundry, thankful for a washer and dryer.

I get to play with my kids who deserve more attention of mine.

I get to spend time with a friend, who needs my help.

I get to read a book. I still have my sight.

I get to remember the things that make me happy.

I give you a challenge. With every thought and conversation for the next day or two, change the words "I have to" with the words "I get to" and see if it makes a difference in your day.

How to be a good listener?

May 10th, 2010   by Mac

Many people neglect this most important communication skill.

Do you know that we spend an average of our waking day communicating?

Of this communication time, 9% is spent writing, 16% reading, 30% talking and 45% listening.

Immediately after hearing something, most of us can recall only 50% of what we hear. Within two to eight weeks, we can recall only 25% or less of the original message. Our mental attitudes reduce our ability to retain what we hear.

Some suggestions to being a good listener are mentioned below.

First of all, stop talking----you can't listen while you are talking.

Ask questions----when you don't understand, when you need further clarification, when you want them to like you and when you want to show that you are listening.

Don't interrupt----give them time to say what they have to say.

Concentrate on what they are saying---- actively focus your attention on their words, their ideas and their feelings as they relate to the subject.

Look at the prospect---- by looking, it gives them confidence that you are, in fact, listening. It helps you to concentrate too.

Leave your emotions behind----try to forget your own worries and problems. Leave them outside of the meeting room. They will prevent you from listening well.

Understand the main points ----concentrate on the main ideas and not the illustrative material.

Don't argue mentally----when you are trying to understand other people, it is a handicap to argue with them mentally as they are speaking. This only sets up a barrier between yourself and the speaker.

Use the difference in rate----you can listen faster than you can talk. So use this rate difference to your advantage by staying on the right track, anticipating what they are going to say, thinking back over what they have just said and evaluating the development of their argument. You speak at about 100 to 150 words per minute, but you think at 250 to 500.

Learn to listen and you will achieve a great success in your life.

What We Want from Sports

May 8th, 2010   by Mac

Students in our school have one thing in common — an interest in sports. Ac-cording to their different intentions in taking part in sports, they fall into three groups.

Many students go to the playground when they feel tired after a few hours of study. These students put much more stress on their study efficiency than the fun of sports. They just want to go back to their classrooms from the playground with a clearer and quicker mind. Thus they don't actually care whether they can enjoy themselves on the playground. Most of them choose long-distance running, the kind of exercise which few real sports enthusiasts like. So this group of students can be well labeled as study-oriented participants.

Students that make up the second group are real sports lovers. Sometimes they even put aside their studies for a match. They take part in the sport that interests them most, not caring whether it is most beneficial to their health. They may be called fun-oriented sports participants.

The third group wants beauty from sports. Boys want to become strong; girls want to be slim and graceful. Those who consider sports the only way of reducing weight also belong to this group. They are very careful in choosing the kind of exercise they do, and are afraid that certain sports may ruin their figures. Horizontal bars and parallel bars are the boys' choice, and the hula-hoop is now the girls' favorite. The appropriate name for this group may be beauty-oriented sports participants.

No matter which group we belong to, we all benefit from sports. If you look around the campus, you will find that bookworms have disappeared, and, instead, there are healthy, strong, clever, modernized students everywhere.
