With little fanfare . Sanderson2 celebrates golden accomplishment3

June 30th, 2010   by Mac

Gael Sanderson, who was a 159-0 as a college wrestler, capped a 5-0 run through the Olympic tournament with a gold medal victory Saturday night.

In keeping with his usual low-key4 style, he did neither a cartwheel5nor a back flip and was quick to say he wasn't flawless6.

"I didn't wrestle perfect here. I gave up a lot of points and made a lot of mistakes, but I was able to score and get the wins," the square-jawed, 25-year-old Utah native said after his 3-1 victory against South Korea's Eui Jae Moon7 in the final of the 185-pound freestyle8 class.

Wrestlers here have turned acrobats9 after winning gold. A champion from Egypt did a cartwheel followed by a back flip. Blowing kisses to the crowd and waving the national flag areroutine10.

" I didn't plan a celebration. I just want to get out of there before I made a fool of myself really," said Sanderson, whose initial reaction on the mat was to smile and raise his arms.

In the quarterfinals Friday night, Sanderson came from behind to earn a 6-5 victory in overtime against Majid Khodaei of Iran. He actually did celebrate that one by clapping his hands once, raising his arms with clenched fists and flashing a big smile.

"More emotion that I've ever seen him have," said his mother. "If he had lost, he would have been eliminated". It was a big round. He had less than a minute to score two takedowns, and that's pretty tough when you're wrestling a guy like that."12

Next up in Saturday morning's semifinals was former world champion Joel Ro¬mero of Cuba'3, who had been 2-0 in tight matches versus Sanderson.

Sanderson beat Romero 3-2. He wrestled a tactical'4 match early, avoiding giving up points on Romero's powerful counter moves. Then he got a couple of Sanderson-style takedowns in the second period to win.

On the medal podium, he had gold around his neck and a wreath'5around his head. Actually, he took the wreath off and on during the National Anthem.

"The nice gentleman that was putting it on my head thought it would stay, I guess," he said. "He doesn't know how big of a head I have. "

Sanderson's never been accused of having a big head as a wrestler. His ap-praisal of his performance was typically understated" : " It feels good. This is the toughest tournament17 in the world, and I'm glad that I had this opportunity and was able to do what I did and win it. "

Sanderson now wants to take some time off from wrestling, and spend time with his wife and family. After he won the Olympic trials'8this year, he was asked what he would do to celebrate. He said he'd buy some living room fur-niture. His wife read about that, and he actually had to buy some furniture.

How does he plan to celebrate Olympic gold?

"I don't know," he said. "I think I promised my wife many things if I won. ... I hope she forgot about everything. "

Joseph Tells His Brothers Who He Is

June 29th, 2010   by Mac

slide_7974_106146_large Then Joseph could no longer control himself before all those who stood by him, and he cried out, "Send everyone away from me. " So no one stayed with him when Joseph made himself known to his brothers. 2And he wept so loudly that the Egyptians heard it, and the household of Pharaoh heard it. joseph said to his brothers, "I am Joseph. Is my father still alive?" But his brothers could not answer him, so dismayed were they at his presence.

4Then Joseph said to his brothers, "Come closer to me. " And they came closer. He said, "I am your brother, Joseph, whom you sold into Egypt. 5And now do not be distressed, or angry with yourselves, because you sold me here; for God sent me before you to preserve life. For the famine has been in the land these two years; and there are five more years in which there will be neither plowing nor harvest. God sent me before you to preserve for you a remnant on earth, and to keep alive for you many survivors. 8So it was not you who sent me here, but God; he has made me a father to Pharaoh, and lord of all his house and ruler over all the land of Egypt. Hurry and go up to my father and say to him, 'Thus says your son Joseph, God has made me lord of all Egypt; come down to me, do not delay. 10You shall settle in the land of Goshen, and you shall be near me, you and your children and your children's children, as well as your flocks, your herds, and all that you have, ill will provide for you there—since there are five more years of famine to come—so that you and your household, and all that you have, will not come to poverty. ' 12And now your eyes and the eyes of my brother Benjamin see that it is my own mouth that speaks to you. isYou must tell my father how greatly I am honored in Egypt, and all that you have seen. Hurry and bring my father down here. " 14Then he fell upon his brother Benjamin's neck and wept, while Benjamin wept upon his neck. 15And he kissed all his brothers and wept upon themi and after that his brothers talked with him.

Is it possible to persuade mankind to live without war?

June 28th, 2010   by Mac

War is an ancient institution which has existed for at least six thousand years. It was always wicked and usually foolish, but in the past the human race managed to live with it. Modern ingenuity has changed this. Either man will abolish war, or war will abolish man. For the present, it is nuclear weapons that cause the gravest danger, but bacteriological or chemical weapons may, before long, offer an even greater threat. If we succeed in abolishing nuclear weapons, our work will not be done. It will never be done until we have succeeded in abolishing war. To do this, we need to persuade mankind to look upon international questions in a new way, not as contests of force in which the victory goes to the side which is most skillful in massacre, but by arbitration in accordance with agreed principles of law. It is not easy to change age - old mental habits, but this is what must be attempted.

There are those who say that the adoption of this or that ideology would prevent war. I believe this to be a profound error. All ideologies are based upon dogmatic assertions which are, at best, doubtful, and at worst, totally false. Their adherents believe in them so fanatically that they are willing to go to war in support of them.

The movement of world opinion during the past two years has been very largely such as we can welcome. It has become commonplace that nuclear war must be avoided. Of course, very difficult problems remain in -the international sphere, but the spirit in which they are being approached is a better one than it was some years ago. It has begun to be thought, even by the powerful men who decide whether we shall live or die, that negotiations should reach agreements even if both sides do not find these agreements wholly satisfactory. It has begun to be understood that the important conflict nowadays is not between East and West, but between Man and the H-bomb.

Fermented Foods for Babies

June 25th, 2010   by Mac

Malnutrition during weaning age—when breast milk in being replaced by semisolid foods— is highly prevalent in children of poor households in many developing counties. While the etiology is complex and multifactorial, the immediate causes are recognized as feeding at less than adequate levels for child growth and development, and recurrent infections, including diarrhoea, resulting mainly from ingestion of contaminated foods. As a result, many young children, particularly between six months to two years of age, experience weight loss and impaired growth and development.

Studies by investigators in various countries have concentrated on traditional food preparation methods and have resulted in offering cheap and practical answers to these problems based on familiar, indigenous and culturally acceptable home processing practices.

Two such answers have arisen. Firstly, cereal fermentation is used for reducing the risk of contamination under the existing inappropriate conditions for food preparation and storage in many households. Secondly, a tiny amount of sprouted grains flour is used in preparation of weaning foods as a magic way to lessen the viscosity without decreasing energy density.

Then you read in English, you are likely to come across words or phrases that you don understand

June 24th, 2010   by Mac

Looking these up in a dictionary can be very time-consuming and frusti ting, however. This makes it difficult to enjoy reading, and it is impractical as well, if yi have to read pages at a time.

When you read in your native language, what do you do if you come across a word th you don' t know? You may occasionally check with a dictionary, but most of the time y( guess the meanings of unfamiliar words from the context. You can do the same when you re* in English.

If you don't know the word " euphemism" and you read it in the sentence, "Pass awe is a euphemism for die. " How do you figure out what it means without looking in a dictionary If you look at the other major words in the sentence—pass away and die— you see that the mean almost the same thing, but that pass away is an indirect or less harsh way of saying die Therefore, a euphemism must be an indirect or less harsh way of saying something. You ar able to figure out the meaning of a word that you didn' t know by looking for clues in the con text.

Sometimes an author will tell you the meaning of an unfamiliar word, or restate the ide

in a way that gives you a clue to the meaning of the unfamiliar word. The sentence " His idea

are really half-baked; he just does not think them out well, " is an example of a restatement o

the idea. The second half of the sentence restates the idea of the first, so half-baked mean!

"not thought out well".

An author may also give an example or illustration of an unfamiliar word. In the sen¬tence , " I was very apprehensive, as if I were waiting to see the dentist," the feeling being described is compared with the common experience of waiting to see the dentist. How do you feel when waiting to see the dentist? You probably feel nervous about what might happen, and that' s what apprehensive means.

Another kind of clue to look for is a word or phrase that is contrasted with the unfamiliar word. In the sentence, " When you remember how shy he used to be, it' s hard to believe how outgoing he is now. " the word shy, which you probably know, is contrasted with the word outgoing, which may be unfamiliar. Since the opposite of shy is friendly, or eager to mix socially, you can guess what outgoing probably means.

You should keep in mind that it is not always necessary to understand the exact meaning of a word when you are reading. If you are able to get a general idea of the meaning of an un-familiar word, that is sufficientfor most types of reading.

Satan® Tests Job

June 23rd, 2010   by Mac

There was once a man in the land of Uz whose name was Job. That man was blameless and upright, one who feared God and turned away from evil. 2 There were born to him seven sons and three daughters. 3 He had seven thou¬sand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen, five hundred donkeys, and very many servants; so that this man was the greatest of all the people of the east. 4 His sons used to go and hold feasts in one another's houses in turn;and they would send and invite their three sisters to eat and drink with them. 5 And when the feast days had run their course,Job would send and sanctify them, and he would rise early in the morning and offer burnt offerings according to the number of them all; for Job said, "It may be that my children have sinned, and cursed God in their hearts. "This is what Job always did.

6 One day the heavenly beings came to present themselves before the LORD , and Satan also came among them. 7 The LORD said to Satan,"Where have you come from?"Satan an-swered the LORD , "From going to and fro on the earth, and from walking up and down on it. " 8 The LORD said to Satan, "Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one like him on the earth,a blameless and upright man who fears God and turns away from evil. " 9Then Satan answered the LORD "Does Job fear God for nothing? loHave you not put a fence around him and his house and all that he has,on every side? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land. 11 But stretch out your hand now and touch all that he has,and he will curse you to your face. " 12 The LORD said to Satan,"Very well, all that he has is in your power) only do not stretch out your hand against him ]" So Satan went out from the presence of the LORD .

Have I Found Ms. Right?

June 22nd, 2010   by Mac

Q: Dear Agnes,

I recently met a wonderful woman, and I have fallen head over heels in love with her. I think she may be Ms. Right, but I don't know. I want to marry her, but how can I be sure she is my ideal1 partner? Yong-Il, Seoul, Korea

A: Dear Yong-Il,

Choosing your life partner is a decision that requires very careful thought. Getting married is something you do not want to take lightly.2 Divorce rates around the world are increasing every year, and in some countries they are now as high as 50 percent! If you don't want to end up3 divorced and heart-broken, take my advice and follow these five rules to help you choose your perfect partner.

First of all, you and your partner should be compatible. You need to know that you share a common purpose in life. You and your partner should have similar goals and ambitions that you can work toward achieving throughout your married life. It will be difficult to keep your marriage together if your partner wants to stay at home and raise a large family, but you want to travel the world instead of having children. Find out what your intended4 spouse's life goals are long before you tie the knot!5

Next, ask yourself this question: Is my partner a person with whom I can share my innermost6 thoughts and feelings? In other words, can you be completely honest and open with this person, or do you sometimes feel shy and uncomfortable telling her how you feel? If your situation is the former, then you have probably found your true love. If, however, it is the latter, take your time before you make plans to walk down the aisle7 with this person.

Third, only marry someone who has qualities you admire. If you respect people who work hard, you should marry someone who is hard-working, not someone who is lazy or too easy-going.

Fourth, marry a person who is polite and kind to others; they will be polite and kind to you. In my experience, you can learn a lot about the true nature of a person by watching how he or she treats other people. & A person who is kind and giving to family and friends will be kind and giving toward you. Someone who has good manners and is polite and respectful toward others will show you the same consideration.8 Watch how your partner treats people she does not have to be nice to such as waiters, taxi drivers, or store clerks. Does your partner pay attention to so how you and others feel, or does she have a self-centered nature?

Exchange a glance with someone, then look away

June 21st, 2010   by Mac

Do you realize that you have made a statement? Hold the glance for a second longer, and you have made a different statement. Hold it for 3 seconds, and the meaning has changed again. For every social situation, there is a permissible time that you can hold a person's gaze without being intimate, rude, or aggressive. If you are on an elevator, what gaze-time are you permitted? To answer this question, consider what you typically do. You very likely give other passengers a quick glance to size them up and to assure them that you mean no threat. Since being close to another person signals the possibility of interaction. You need to emit a signal telling others you want to be left alone. So you cut off eye contact, what sociologist Erving Goffman ( 1963) calls "a dimming of the lights. " You look down at the floor, at the indicator lights, anywhere but into another passenger's eyes. Should you break the rule against staring at a stranger on an elevator, you will make the other person exceedingly uncomfortable, and you are likely to feel a bit strange yourself.

If you hold eye contact for more than 3 seconds, what are you telling another person? Much depends on the person and the situation. For instance, a man and a woman communicate interest in this manner. They typically gaze at each other for about 3 seconds at a time, then drop their eyes down for 3 seconds, before letting their eyes meet again. But if one man gives another man a 3-second-plus stare, he signals, "I know you" , "I am interested in you," or "You look peculiar and I am curious about you. " This type of stare often produces hostile feelings.

Since we are social beings, the quality of our lives depends in large measure on our interpersonal relationships

June 19th, 2010   by Mac

One strength of the human condition is our tendency to give and receive support from one another ,under stressful circumstances. Social support consists of the exchange of resources among people based on their interpersonal ties. Those of us with strong support systems appear better able to cope with major life changes and daily hassles ( [H )$0 • People with strong social ties live longer and have better health than those without such ties.

Studies over a range of illnesses , from depression to heart disease , reveal that the presence of social support helps people fend off illness, and the absence of such support makes poor health more likely.

Social support cushions stress in a number of ways. First , friends , relatives , and co-workers may let us know that they value us. Our self-respect is strengthened when we feel accepted by others despite our faults and difficulties. Second , other people often provide us with informational support. They help us to define and understand our problems and find solutions to them. Third , we typically find social companionship supportive. Engaging in leisure-time activities with others helps us to meet our social needs while at the same time distracting us from

our worries and troubles. Finally, other people may give us instrumental support — financial aid, material resources , and needed services — that reduces stress by helping us resolve and cope with our problems.

An Event

June 18th, 2010   by Mac

When I arrived at a few minutes before seven, I found the platoon assembled and ready to go. It was cold, and in the ranks the men were shivering and dancing up and down to keep warm. I was only the second-in-command of the platoon at that time, under instruction from a senior lieutenant, who was the platoon commander. Punctually at seven I said to Broadhurst, "March off, Sergeant. To the aerodrome, at the double. "

Broadhurst asked doubtfully whether we shouldn't wait for the platoon commander, who had not turn up. Unversed in the ways of the army, I said, "No, march off. The men are cold. " We doubled off.

Three or four minutes later the platoon commander, who had about fourteen years of service, appeared. He was in a towering rage. He rushed straight up to Broadhurst and asked him furiously what he meant by marching off without permission.

Broadhurst said, "I'm sorry, sir. "

My feet wouldn't move. My mouth wouldn't open. I made a gigantic effort and said, "Sir—" But the lieutenant had given Broadhurst a final blast and taken command. I looked at Broadhurst, but he was busy. After parade I apologized to him, but I never explained-to the lieutenant. Broadhurst told me the incident wasn't worth worrying about.

It was the worst thing that I ever did in the army, because in it I showed cowardice and disloyalty. The only excuses I could find for myself were that it happened quickly and that I was very young. It had a result, though. I had been frightened of the lieutenant, frightened of being reprimanded, frightened of failure even in the smallest endeavor. I discovered now that being ashamed of yourself is worse than any fear. Duty, orders, loyalty, obedience—all things boiled down to one single idea; Whatever the consequences, a man must act so that he can live with himself.
